RIFT

Regenereative Ideas For Tomorrow

RIFT is an artistic research project exploring ways of building with regenerative materials from the Nordic region. At a time when the construction sector accounts for 40% of the world’s carbon emissions, a paradigm shift is needed. The Nordic countries have the potential to lead the way, but this requires courageous questions, diverse perspectives, and a willingness to rethink conventional structures.

RIFT begins with a simple yet profound recognition: we are not separate from nature – we are nature. This understanding serves as both a conceptual foundation and a call to action. The way we build must reflect our entanglement with ecological systems and our responsibility to regenerate them. Initiated in response to the urgent need to rethink our material cultures in the age of climate crisis, RIFT is an ongoing exploration of regenerative building practices rooted in the Nordic context. It critically investigates biogenic materials—those that are naturally renewable, carbon-sequestering, and regionally sourced—as a response to the extractive logic of conventional construction.

Our inquiry is both speculative and practice-oriented, blending research, craft and design. We explore how traditional knowledge and material heritage can inform future-forward methods of construction that align with living systems. Through material prototyping, workshops and collaborations with ecologists, architects and craftspeople, RIFT evolves as a platform for exchange and experimentation. Rather than propose a finished architectural object, RIFT examines processes: how materials are grown, harvested, shaped and ultimately returned to the earth. The project fosters curiosity around how these processes shape not only spaces but also relationships—between humans, materials, and landscapes.

RIFT’s impact lies in its ability to shift perception, offering a narrative that positions the act of building within regenerative cycles. The most successful aspect has been its role as a catalyst for dialogue—inviting diverse voices to imagine a built environment that heals rather than harms. Looking forward, we envision RIFT expanding through site-specific installations, participatory research, and interdisciplinary collaborations across the Nordic region. Our aim is to cultivate a regenerative design culture that embraces complexity, honors ecological wisdom and builds with nature.

THE HAND – tactility and practice

Through material experimentation and sensory art, we explore how regenerative principles can be experienced. For each location RIFT visits, we create unique installations that test the tactile qualities of biogenic materials, showcasing their character, potential, and interaction with visitors and the space. Central to this is the immediate sensory experience.

THE DIALOGUE - community and collaboration

For the roundtable discussions, we invite passionate voices from research, architecture, art, and craft to share knowledge, challenge established ways of thinking, and explore how regenerative materials can shape the spaces of the future. The audience is invited to take part, creating an open platform for new ideas and collaborations.

THE MIND - research and reflection

A space for exchanging ideas where we explore the history of materials, their role in the present, and their potential for the future. We place materials in a broader context – from ecosystems to resource extraction. Knowledge is mapped and visualized on walls and ceilings, allowing visitors to follow the process and see insights develop over time.

What we do

We are a Nordic-based design team exploring regenerative building practices through biogenic materials, ecological thinking & hands-on experimentation

RIFT engages people through dialogue, public art, and interactive experiences. By inviting participation and exchange, we seek to strengthen local communities and, together, shape a more sustainable and regenerative built environment.

We are driven by a shared belief that architecture must exist in deep dialogue with ecological systems, our work combines ecological thinking, craft and community engagement. Through this approach, we challenge extractive building practices and propose new, more caring relationships between people, materials and nature.
